Moving a home or business in Marquette, MI, brings new and exciting opportunities. However, not being properly prepared can lead to a disorganized disaster. There’s more to moving than just packing up boxes and throwing them in a truck. Knowing what to expect and how to go about it can make all the difference in the end result.

The DIY route looks appealing on paper, especially when you’re watching your budget. But hidden costs have a way of appearing: rental truck fees, fuel, packing supplies, potential injury, and the sheer time investment. A professional moving company will offer more than just labor—they deliver peace of mind, efficiency, and protection for your belongings.

With more than 80 years of serving the moving needs of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin, we’ve created this comprehensive guide to help you get the most out of your Marquette moving company.

How to Identify a Trustworthy Moving Company in Marquette

Check for Proper Licensing

Licensing verification should be your first step in making sure whoever you consider for your move is trustworthy and qualified. In Michigan, moving companies must:

Register as a business with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

Have a Household Goods Carrier Certificate (Intrastate Operating Authority) and identification decals on their trucks issued by the Michigan State Police (MSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED).

Obtain USDOT authorization from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for interstate moves or intrastate moves with trucks exceeding a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds.

Review Valuation Coverage

Even more essential to protecting your belongings is valuation coverage. Professional movers should present multiple levels of valuation coverage for your possessions. Make sure you understand your options:

Released Value Protection, Michigan’s required minimum coverage of $0.60 per pound per article

Enhanced Full Value Protection for complete replacement value

Supplemental coverage for high-value or irreplaceable items

Investigate Company Reputation

There are a few steps you can take to determine the service quality of a moving company in Marquette:

Examining reviews across multiple websites and platforms, like Google Customer Reviews and Yelp

Checking Better Business Bureau records for complaint history

Reviewing references of moves similar to yours

Observing how companies address and resolve customer concerns

Recognize Warning Signs

The last thing you want is to get scammed or end up booking with a shady mover. Be wary of red flags that could signal unethical business practices, like suspiciously low price quotes, refusal to share licensing information, being cagey about straightforward questions, or pressuring you into signing a contract that is blank or doesn’t list itemized prices. Trust your instincts—if something seems off, don’t risk it.

Prioritize Upper Peninsula Experience

Marquette’s location on Lake Superior, combined with extreme winter conditions, demands specialized regional knowledge. Movers experienced with the Upper Peninsula understand seasonal traffic and weather trends, the best routes, and local road conditions. This level of expertise directly impacts how smoothly your relocation proceeds.

Breaking Down Moving Costs

Every move carries unique pricing factors. Understanding these variables helps you create realistic budgets and compare estimates accurately.

Pricing Models Explained

Short-distance relocations (under 40 miles): These typically are charged at an hourly rate. “Moving within Marquette, Michigan will typically cost you from $523 to $4,593, or about $139 per hour,” according to moveBuddha. Final costs reflect crew size, truck dimensions, access challenges like staircases, and items requiring special handling.

Longer relocations (beyond 40 miles): “Moves over 40 miles are considered regulated moves with rates controlled by a state-filed tariff based on weight and mileage,” explains Yahoo Local. Expect additional charges for fuel adjustments, highway tolls, and seasonal demand variations.

Assess Your Pricing Options

The most effective strategy for getting the best price for the best quality service is to get at least three moving estimates from reputable moving companies. A Marquette mover you can trust should provide complimentary estimates outlining all anticipated expenses. Rather than focusing solely on the bottom line, examine what each proposal covers and how detailed they are.

Critical Pricing Questions

What circumstances trigger charges beyond the initial estimate?

How does your company manage unforeseen complications during the move?

Do you charge extra for flights of stairs, extended carries, or challenging parking?

Which payment options do you accept, and what’s your payment schedule?

Clarifying these details beforehand ensures you know exactly what you’re paying for and aren’t caught by surprise.

Selecting Your Service Package

Moving services typically offer a lot of flexibility for customization. This lets you book only the services that best fit your situation.

Full-Service Options

Full-service moving delivers the maximum level of convenience, ideal for the busy home or business owner. While this approach costs more, it saves both time and physical labor and is extremely efficient. Comprehensive full-service packages generally include:

Pre-move furniture disassembly

Complete household packing using quality materials

Careful loading with professional equipment

Secure transportation to your destination

Complete unloading and unpacking services

Furniture reassembly and room-by-room placement

Personalize Your Services

The one-size-fits-all approach just doesn’t work for moves— everyone’s situation and budget is different. Most companies will offer to mix-and-match services to fit your needs. Just need help packing and loading? Labor-only might be the better fit for you. Or you might need extra care beyond full-service, such as for senior moves or high-value items.

Common service options include:

Loading and unloading assistance: Professional handling ensures proper care and precise placement in your new space

Transportation: Skilled drivers familiar with Marquette’s roads and Upper Peninsula winter driving conditions reduce transportation stress

Furniture breakdown and reconstruction: Protects large items and ensures smooth passage through doorways and tight spaces

Professional packing: Options range from complete home packing to targeted assistance with fragile items, all using commercial-grade materials

Short or long-term storage: Options like a warehouse or self-storage facilities safeguard your belongings when your moving timeline requires flexibility

Specialized item transport: Expert handling for pianos, fine art, antiques, safes, hot tubs, and other valuables requiring extra attention

Preparation Strategies for Moving Day

When to Book Your Mover

“For local moves, we recommend booking your move two to eight weeks in advance. For long-distance moves, it’s best to book at least one to four months out,” advises moveBuddha. Early booking gives you the best selection of companies and moving dates, which is especially important during peak times like summer or during the academic calendar when Northern Michigan University creates higher demand for moving services.

Declutter and Reduce What You’re Moving

Moving presents the perfect opportunity to evaluate what you actually need. Take time to:

Sort through closets, storage areas, and garage items.

Donate usable belongings to local Marquette charities.

Sell valuable items you no longer need.

Discard damaged or worn-out possessions.

Remember: Fewer items mean lower moving costs and less complexity.

Understand Transport Restrictions

Certain items can’t be transported due to safety regulations and company policies. Plan ahead for:

Hazardous chemicals and materials

Compressed gases and propane containers

Household cleaning products and solvents

Paint products and thinners

Ammunition and certain firearms (restrictions vary)

Perishable food items

Ready Your Property

For the lowest cost and smoothest process, you want to make things as easy as possible for the day of the move:

Establish clear paths between rooms and exits

Eliminate potential obstacles

Ensure all packing is complete

Keep pets secured in a separate room or off-site

During winter months, thoroughly clear snow and ice from all access points—Marquette’s substantial snowfall can significantly complicate loading

Moving Day Procedures

It’s moving day! Your crew arrives on time and ready to work. Here’s what to expect.

1. Opening Assessment

The team conducts a walkthrough of your property, discussing special needs and confirming the scope of work. This is your opportunity to point out items requiring special care or handling, clarify which items are moving and which are staying, ask any final questions about the process, and confirm destination address and access details.

2. Loading Process

Professional movers use tested methods and protective materials—furniture pads, stretch wrap, and securing straps—to keep your belongings in perfect shape. Their training teaches them to load trucks in a way that prevents items from shifting during transport.

3. Essential Paperwork

Loading is completed, and you’re about to send the truck off to the next destination. At this point, you’ll receive two critical documents:

Bill of Lading: Your moving contract and receipt, detailing service information, addresses, and expected timelines.

Inventory Sheet: A detailed list of all items with identification numbers or tags, noting the condition before loading.

Carefully review both documents and keep them on hand for delivery.

Finalizing Your Relocation

When your belongings arrive at your new Marquette location, a few final steps complete the process.

1. Delivery Verification

Use your inventory sheet to verify everything arrives safely. Match item tags to your inventory list, inspect belongings as they’re unloaded, document any damage from transport, and make sure to take photos of any concerns right away.

2. Completion Signature

Once everything checks out, you’ll sign the Bill of Lading to officially complete your move. This signature confirms you’ve received your belongings and are satisfied with the service.

3. Claim Procedures if Necessary

If you discover damaged or missing items, contact your moving company immediately to file a claim. You have nine months from your delivery date to file a claim, but it’s best to report issues as soon as possible for the best resolution. Keep in mind that you will need to provide documentation and photos of any damage, along with your inventory sheet and Bill of Lading. Your compensation will be based on the valuation coverage you chose when booking.

Main Factors of a Successful Marquette Move

A successful move in Marquette comes down to preparation, communication, and choosing the right partner. Keep these key factors in mind:

Confirm proper CVED and USDOT licensing and insurance for any company you’re considering.

Collect and compare thorough estimates from at least three providers.

Carefully determine which service options truly match your situation and budget.

Account for Marquette’s climate—winter relocations demand additional preparation and scheduling flexibility.

Stay organized with comprehensive checklists and timelines.

Keep in touch with your moving company regarding expectations.

Selecting a moving company that demonstrates professionalism, regional expertise, and genuine care for your belongings transforms a potentially stressful process into a smooth, manageable moving experience. Combined with informed preparation, you’re set up for a successful relocation in Marquette.

Moving can be an intimidating project without proper planning and assistance. Whether you’re moving within Marquette County or heading out of state, choosing the right moving company is essential for a smooth and successful transition. Different movers offer varying levels of service—some handle everything from packing to unpacking, while others focus primarily on transportation. Understanding your moving needs is the first step toward making an informed choice.

Consider the scope of your move. Are you relocating a few pieces of furniture or an entire household? Do you have specialty items like antiques or a piano that require extra care? Will you need storage options before, during, or after your move? Not every moving company offers the same services, so knowing your requirements will help narrow down your options.

With the challenges that come with moving, hiring professionals to shoulder some of the work makes sense. However, the moving company you select can have a huge impact on your overall experience. Consider this your guide to finding a quality mover in Marquette that will make your next move your smoothest yet.

Full-Service, Labor-Only, and Specialized Moving Services

Full-Service Moving: These companies handle the entire process. They take care of packing, loading, transportation, unloading, and unpacking. Many also supply packing materials, disassemble and reassemble furniture, and offer storage solutions.

Labor-Only Moving: This budget-friendly option works well for those willing to handle some aspects themselves. The professionals handle the heavy lifting (loading and unloading), leaving the packing, unpacking, and transportation to you.

Specialized Moving Services: Certain possessions need special attention. Whether it’s valuable antiques, musical instruments, artwork, or bulky machinery, specialized movers have the expertise and equipment to transport fragile or oversized items safely.

Local, Long-Distance, and International Moving Options

Local Moves: Typically covering distances under 50 miles, local moves are usually charged hourly rather than by weight. Local movers are familiar with Marquette’s neighborhoods, traffic patterns, and access challenges.

Long-Distance Moves: Relocations beyond 50 miles qualify as long-distance moves. These require more extensive planning, larger vehicles, and careful coordination of logistics.

International Moves: Moving across international borders involves more than just transportation. It requires knowledge of customs regulations, container shipping, and specialized packing techniques. Movers with international experience manage the paperwork and logistics necessary for a smooth cross-border relocation.

Moving Services for Heavy and Special Care Items

Some possessions require additional attention due to their size, weight, or fragility. Not all moving companies are equipped or trained to handle these items properly.

Pianos and Large Furniture: These items require specialized equipment such as dollies, straps, and protective padding. Professional movers know how to navigate heavy pieces through tight spaces without damage.

Antiques and Artwork: Delicate items need climate-controlled transportation and custom crating to prevent damage during transit.

Appliances and Electronics: Moving refrigerators, washing machines, and entertainment systems require properly securing doors, cables, and sensitive components.

Understanding these service options will help you select a moving company that aligns with your specific needs. Whether you need comprehensive assistance or just transportation, choosing the right type of mover ensures a more efficient relocation.

Researching Mover Qualifications and Reputation

Guindon Moving & Storage

Check for Proper Licensing and Certifications

Moving companies must meet legal requirements to operate, and verifying their credentials helps prevent complications. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number.” This number confirms the company’s registration and compliance with federal regulations.

Visit the FMCSA website and search for a mover’s USDOT number to verify their registration.

For moves within Michigan, check a moving company’s license with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

Look for industry certifications, such as those from the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) or the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which indicate adherence to professional standards.

Analyze Customer Reviews and Service History

Customer experiences provide valuable insights into a moving company’s reliability. Reviews reveal patterns in service quality, pricing transparency, and professionalism. Rather than focusing solely on overall ratings, examine individual customer feedback.

Use established review platforms like Google Reviews, Yelp, BBB, and FMCSA’s complaint database to read firsthand accounts.

Watch for recurring issues such as delayed deliveries, damaged items, or unexpected fees—these suggest potential problems.

Notice how the company responds to complaints. A mover that engages with negative feedback demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction.

As Move.org advises, “Find customer reviews on third-party sites like Yelp and Google Reviews instead of just reading the customer reviews that companies share on their websites; those are always cherry-picked and don’t fully reflect actual customer experiences.”

Verify the Mover’s Track Record & Local Reputation

A company’s reputation develops over time, and a longer history often indicates a more reliable operation. While newer companies can provide excellent service, established movers with consistent records offer greater peace of mind.

Confirm how long the company has been in business using resources like state business registries or BBB listings.

Ask if they have experience with moves similar to yours, especially if you have specialty items like antiques or large furniture.

Request referrals from previous customers—reputable companies will readily provide references.

A mover with frequent jobs in your region understands local regulations, traffic patterns, and logistical challenges. If you’re in Marquette, ask if they have handled moves within the area recently. Their familiarity with local roads, weather conditions, and regulations can prevent delays and complications.

Cross-Check with Consumer Protection Agencies

Government agencies and watchdog organizations monitor moving companies and identify those with frequent issues. Before committing, check whether the company has unresolved complaints or legal disputes.

The FMCSA’s National Consumer Complaint Database lists complaints against interstate movers.

Michigan residents can review moving company complaints through LARA’s consumer protection division.

Local consumer protection offices or the Michigan Attorney General’s website may provide additional information about a mover’s legal record.

Ask About Common Challenges

Experienced movers anticipate and overcome typical obstacles. Ask them:

How do they handle moves involving narrow hallways, steep staircases, or elevator restrictions?

Do they have experience moving large or delicate items specific to your needs?

What strategies do they employ for multi-story homes, apartment buildings, or businesses with specialized equipment?

Check Industry Expertise

Years in the industry can indicate a mover’s ability to handle various scenarios. However, longevity alone isn’t sufficient—look for consistent customer feedback that confirms their reliability over time.

Assessing the Company’s Equipment and Workforce

Guindon Moving & Storage

Reliable Equipment Makes a Difference

A well-equipped moving company ensures efficiency and safety. Modern trucks with air-ride suspension protect fragile items from excessive jolting, while GPS tracking provides real-time updates on your shipment. Equipment like dollies, furniture pads, and hoisting straps facilitate smoother loading and unloading, reducing the risk of damage.

Ask about the company’s fleet. Well-maintained vehicles minimize the chance of breakdowns during transit, preventing unnecessary delays. A professional mover should also have backup trucks available in case of mechanical issues.

Skilled Workers Handle Moves More Efficiently

A moving crew’s training and experience directly impact service quality. Movers should be knowledgeable about proper lifting techniques, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and securing items inside a truck. Without these skills, the risk of property damage and worker injury increases.

Check if movers receive formal training. Some companies conduct in-house training programs to standardize skills.

Ask about background checks. Trustworthy moving companies screen employees before hiring.

Consider employee retention. A company with long-term staff members likely treats workers well and maintains consistent service.

Independent Movers vs. Brokers

Not all companies operate the same way. Some movers handle every aspect of the process directly, while others function as brokers, outsourcing the job to third-party contractors.

Independent moving companies own their trucks and equipment and employ their workers. This arrangement ensures accountability and consistent service quality.

Moving brokers coordinate the move but don’t handle the transportation themselves. They subcontract jobs to other companies, which can lead to service inconsistencies and unexpected fees.

As This Old House notes, “Carriers often provide better reliability and accountability, as you’re dealing directly with the company responsible for your move.”

Evaluating a Mover’s Insurance and Valuation Coverage in Marquette, MI

Guindon Moving & Storage

Accidents happen, and not all moving companies offer the same level of protection. Understanding mover insurance and liability coverage ensures your belongings remain protected throughout the relocation process. Moving companies provide different levels of coverage, and knowing your options helps make an informed decision.

Types of Moving Insurance Options

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “Under Federal law, interstate movers must offer two different liability options referred to as valuation coverage: Full Value Protection and Released Value.” Some third-party insurance providers also offer additional coverage if needed.

Released Value Protection: This option comes at no additional cost, but coverage is minimal. The mover assumes liability for only $0.60 per pound per item. If a 10-pound lamp breaks, reimbursement would be just $6, regardless of its actual value.

Full Value Protection: This coverage holds the mover responsible for either repairing, replacing, or offering a cash settlement for lost or damaged items. It costs extra, but the moving company must compensate you for the item’s current market value.

Third-Party Coverage: If neither option provides sufficient peace of mind, consider purchasing separate moving insurance from an independent provider. This can cover high-value items that might not be fully protected under standard policies.

Understanding Valuation Coverage

Valuation coverage determines the mover’s level of financial responsibility in case of loss or damage. While it differs from traditional insurance, it plays a crucial role in reimbursement decisions.

Declared Value: This is based on the total weight of your shipment. You declare a value per pound, and that figure establishes the maximum liability the mover accepts.

Lump Sum Value: Instead of weight-based coverage, you simply specify the total worth of your belongings. This may be more suitable for households with lighter but valuable items or for those with no high-value items that don’t want to itemize everything.

Choosing the Right Coverage

Not all moves require the same level of protection. Consider these key factors when making your decision:

High-Value Belongings: Expensive electronics, artwork, or antiques might need Full Value Protection or third-party insurance.

Overall Budget: Released Value Protection may work for cost-conscious movers willing to accept minimal compensation for damages.

Distance of the Move: Long-distance moves increase the chances of loss or damage, making comprehensive coverage a wiser choice.

Request a written explanation of available coverage and any exclusions to prevent misunderstandings. Some policies exclude damages caused by improper packing when done by the customer rather than the mover.

Understanding the Moving Contract and Policies

Guindon Moving & Storage

A moving contract outlines the terms of service between you and the moving company. Reviewing it carefully helps avoid misunderstandings and unexpected charges. Contracts vary, but most include key sections that define cost, responsibilities, and policies.

Key Elements of a Moving Contract

Estimate Type: The contract specifies whether the estimate is binding or non-binding. A binding estimate locks in the total cost, while a non-binding estimate may change based on several factors determined after the move is completed.

Service Details: It lists all included services, such as packing, loading, transportation, unloading, and additional offerings like storage or specialty handling.

Pickup and Delivery Dates: The agreement should include a window for pickup and delivery. Some movers guarantee dates, while others provide a timeframe based on logistics.

Payment Terms: Contracts clarify when and how payments are made. Some require deposits, while others operate on full payment upon delivery.

Inventory Sheet: This document lists all items being moved. Movers use it to verify delivery and condition.

Cancellation Policy, Delivery Times, and Claims Process

Cancellation Policy: Policies vary by company. Some offer full refunds if canceled within a certain period, while others may retain a portion of the deposit.

Delivery Timeframe: Most movers provide a delivery window instead of a fixed date. Delays happen due to factors like weather, distance, or scheduling conflicts.

Claims Process: If items arrive damaged or missing, the contract should outline steps for filing a claim. Federal law requires claims to be submitted within a set timeframe, often within 9 months of delivery by the movers.

Reading the contract thoroughly ensures you understand the responsibilities of both sides. Asking questions about unclear terms will help you form clear expectations before moving day.

Inquiring About Additional Services and Costs

Not all moving companies provide the same services, and costs can vary based on what’s included. Asking the right questions about additional services and potential fees will help avoid surprises on your final bill.

Packing and Unpacking Services

As Moving.com notes, “In addition to loading and unloading the truck, most professional moving companies also offer packing and unpacking services. So be sure to inquire about the pricing of these services as well.” Some movers offer full packing, partial packing, or fragile-item packing. Clarify what each option includes and whether packing materials are part of the price.

Unpacking services can save time, but they often come at an extra cost. Ask if the company will also dispose of packing materials.

If you prefer to pack yourself, ask if there’s an option to purchase packing supplies directly from the company.

Temporary Storage Solutions

Storage-in-transit (SIT) is useful if your new home isn’t ready on moving day. Check how long items can stay in storage and what the daily or monthly rates are.

Long-term storage may be available if you need extended time before receiving your belongings.

Climate-controlled storage is an option if you’re storing temperature-sensitive items—particularly important in Marquette’s variable climate. Ask about the conditions and costs.

Specialized Handling for Unique Items

Large or bulky items like pianos, pool tables, and safes may require special handling. Confirm whether the company has experience moving such items and if they charge extra.

Artwork, antiques, and high-value collectibles may need custom crating or additional insurance. Ask what measures are in place to protect these belongings.

Vehicles, motorcycles, and boats might require specialized transport. Check if the company offers this service or if they partner with a vehicle transportation provider.

Extra Costs and Add-On Fees

Angi.com informs that stairs, elevators, and “[any obstruction] in your home that causes inconveniences to the movers, slows down the process, or requires more hands will increase the overall price.” If your residence has any of these obstacles, ask what they will cost.

Some movers charge extra for handling bulky or extra-heavy items. Get a list of anything that might raise your price.

If you need to change your moving date, ask about rescheduling fees. Last-minute adjustments can result in higher costs.

In Marquette, seasonal factors like winter weather might affect pricing. Ask about potential weather-related fees or delays.

Every moving company structures its services differently, so a thorough conversation about add-ons and potential fees ensures transparency in pricing. Getting a detailed breakdown in writing will help keep your moving budget on track.

The New York Times recommends, “Start the search for a moving company as soon as possible—preferably two months before your move—to get the best price.” Having time to gather multiple quotes from different moving companies allows for a well-rounded comparison of services and pricing. However, estimates can be misleading without a thorough review. Here’s how to approach it:

Ask for at least three quotes to compare costs and included services.

Request an in-home or virtual survey for the most accurate estimate rather than relying on a phone or online quote.

Review the breakdown of costs—labor, transportation, packing materials, and any extra fees should be clearly outlined.

Look for potential hidden fees, such as charges for stairs, long carries, or extra-heavy items.

Binding vs. Non-Binding Estimates

Not all estimates guarantee the final price. Understanding the difference will prevent last-minute surprises.

Binding Estimate: The moving company commits to a set price based on the services listed. If additional services are needed, costs may adjust, but the original quote remains unchanged unless the customer requests something new.

Non-Binding Estimate: The initial quote serves as an approximation. The final bill may be higher if the move takes more time, the weight exceeds the initial calculation, special handling is needed that was not originally included, or due to long-carry fees if there are obstacles that make the move more complicated.

Binding Not-To-Exceed Estimate: If the final move costs less than estimated, you pay the lower amount. If it costs more, the price remains at the estimate.

H3: Value vs. Price: Looking Beyond the Bottom Line

A low price doesn’t always mean the best deal. The cheapest option might exclude necessary services or lack reliability. Weigh additional factors:

Service scope: Some movers offer packing, storage, or furniture assembly—services that add convenience.

Reputation: A well-reviewed company with slightly higher rates may deliver a smoother experience than a lower-cost option with poor customer feedback.

Insurance coverage: Basic liability protection is included, but movers may offer comprehensive coverage for high-value items.

Experience: Companies with years of handling similar moves may prevent accidents or damaged belongings better than an inexperienced team.

Identifying Red Flags and Avoiding Moving Scams

Not every moving company operates with integrity. Some take advantage of customers with hidden fees, missing deliveries, or even outright fraud. Spotting red flags early prevents stress and financial losses.

Common Red Flags to Watch For

No Physical Address: A legitimate mover will have an office location. If a company only provides a P.O. box or lacks a listed address, consider it a warning sign.

Unusually Low Estimates: Consumer Reports advises, “Be suspicious if an estimate is unusually low or if the moving company provides an estimate over the phone or online without sending a representative to scope out the job.” A quote far lower than competitors often indicates bait-and-switch tactics. The company might demand more money after loading your belongings.

Large Deposits Required: Reputable movers don’t ask for significant upfront payments. A standard deposit should range between 10-20% of the estimated cost.

Lack of a Written Contract: Verbal agreements leave no protection. Professional movers provide detailed contracts outlining services, costs, and timelines.

No USDOT Number: Interstate movers must be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. A missing or unverifiable USDOT number suggests an unlicensed operation.

Generic or Suspicious Company Name: Scammers often change business names frequently to avoid bad reviews. If customer service avoids stating the company name clearly, investigate further.

No Insurance or Licensing Information: Reliable moving companies provide proof of insurance and licensing. If they hesitate or refuse, look elsewhere.

Poor or No Online Presence: A lack of reviews, a minimal website, or an absence of business listings on platforms like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) raises concerns.

How to Verify a Moving Company’s Trustworthiness

Check USDOT and MC Numbers: Use the FMCSA website to confirm the company’s registration.

Read Customer Reviews: Look at Google Reviews, Yelp, and BBB ratings. A pattern of problems like damaged items or unexpected fees signals potential issues.

Request a Physical Estimate: Reputable movers inspect the items in person or conduct a virtual survey before giving a final estimate.

Verify Business Credentials: Search for the company on BBB, the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA), and local consumer protection agencies.

Ask for References: A trustworthy mover provides references from past customers upon request.

Confirm Payment Terms: Reliable movers accept multiple forms of payment. Be wary if a company insists on cash-only transactions.

Review the Contract in Detail: Read every part of the contract, including fine print, service details, and cancellation policies. Never sign a blank or incomplete contract.

Cost of Hiring an Upper Peninsula Moving Company

How Much Does a Move in the Upper Peninsula Cost?

Moving expenses in the Upper Peninsula can change based on distance, belongings, and services needed. The distance of your move is a key factor in determining the cost of moving in the Upper Peninsula. The amount of belongings you have will also impact the overall cost of your move. Additionally, the specific services you require, such as packing or storage, will influence the final cost of your move.

Local moving companies often charge an hourly rate, while long-distance moves are priced based on the weight of your belongings. It’s important to remember that additional fees such as packing, special handling, or storage may impact your overall costs. According to Movebuddha, “The average cost of hiring movers in Michigan is $139 per hour with an average total move cost between $509 and $4,578, depending on the size and distance of your move.” Remember that these estimates can vary greatly based on the time of year, with summer months usually being more expensive due to higher demand.

Understanding Your Moving Estimate: Key Factors

Navigating through free estimates for your move in the Upper Peninsula requires attention to several factors. Here’s a detailed breakdown to guide your decision-making process:

Cost Factors: The expense of moving within the Upper Peninsula usually depends on an hourly charge. The total time spent moving your items, including the packing, loading, and unloading phases, is multiplied by this hourly rate. Various factors can influence the final cost:

The amount of belongings being moved

Extra services requested

How accessible your current home is

Whether stairs or elevators are involved

If furniture needs to be disassembled and reassembled

The distance of your move

Any special items or specific requirements

Understanding Moving Insurance Options: Upper Peninsula Moving Companies offer a range of insurance coverages. The most basic option typically covers a minimal amount per pound per item, offering limited protection at no extra cost. For broader coverage, you should discuss further options with your moving company or consider third-party insurance providers to ensure your belongings are adequately protected.

Costs for Interstate Moves: If your move takes you out of the Upper Peninsula to another state, the price can vary significantly based on your destination. It’s essential to obtain detailed quotes tailored to your specific move to understand potential costs accurately.

In summary, when you’re getting estimates for your move in the Upper Peninsula, think about how many items you have. Consider any extra services you might need. Also, think about how far you’re moving. Remember to mention any special requests or items you have. By considering these factors, you can make a more informed decision when selecting the moving services that align with your specific needs and budget.

Budgeting for Your Move

Managing your moving budget well is key to a stress-free move. This Forbes article explains, “as you create your moving budget, consider the different ways you can strategize to save money and organize your finances during this time.” Here are a few straightforward tips for keeping your moving budget under control:

Make a Complete Budget: Start by listing every expense you’ll have for the move. This includes what you’ll pay the movers, the cost of boxes and packing tape, any insurance you’ll need, and if you’re putting things in storage. Also, think about the costs of getting your new place ready, like turning on the water and electricity or buying things you need immediately.

Compare Prices: It’s smart to get estimates from a few moving companies in the Upper Peninsula. This lets you see the going rate and find the best deal. Remember, the cheapest option might not always be the best. You want to make sure you’re getting good service for what you pay.

Know Your Estimate: Determine if the price the movers give you is set in stone (a binding estimate) or if it could change depending on the move’s actual details (a non-binding estimate)

Have an Emergency Fund: Sometimes, things do not go as planned, and you might incur extra costs. Setting aside money can help keep the stress down if surprises pop up.

Keep an Eye on Spending: Write down everything you spend related to the move. This helps you stick to your budget and see places to save money.

Check Your Insurance: Make sure you know what the moving company’s insurance covers and what it doesn’t. If it feels like it’s not enough, you might want to get extra insurance. Just make sure it’s worth it compared to the value of your stuff.

These steps can improve how you manage your money during a move. This can make the experience of moving to your new home in the Upper Peninsula smoother and less costly.

Saving Money on Your Move Without Losing Quality

Cutting costs on your move doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality. There are smart ways to save that won’t affect the smoothness of your transition. Before diving into specifics, remember that the goal is to reduce expenses while ensuring a high-quality moving experience. Here are some tips for saving money on your Upper Penninsula move:

Off-Season Moving Times: Scheduling your move during less busy times, like the late fall or winter, can significantly reduce costs. Weekday moves might also offer lower rates than weekends due to decreased demand.

Handle Some Tasks Yourself: Taking on some of the moving tasks, such as packing your belongings, dismantling furniture, and preparing lighter items, can cut down on the hours movers need to work, thereby reducing your overall expenses.

Declutter Before the Move: Lightening your load by selling, donating, or discarding items you no longer need lowers your moving costs and puts some extra money in your pocket.

Find Affordable Packing Solutions: You don’t have to spend a fortune on packing materials. Look for deals or free supplies from local stores, use household items for padding, and borrow what you can from friends and family.

Negotiate with Moving Companies: Don’t hesitate to ask for discounts or more budget-friendly service options. Movers might have flexibility in their pricing or offer packages that better suit your financial needs.

Steer Clear of Last-Minute Changes: Keeping to your original moving plan as much as possible helps avoid incurring additional fees that can come up from sudden changes to the schedule or services.

With these points in mind, you can find a moving company in the Upper Peninsula that fits your needs and budget, making your move as smooth as possible.

Choosing an Upper Peninsula Moving Company

Choosing the right moving company in the Upper Peninsula involves considering several important factors:

Experience Matters

When planning to move in the Upper Peninsula, choosing a moving company with extensive experience in the area is important. Experienced movers are better equipped to handle the challenges of moving in this region, making your move easier and more efficient.

You should look for a moving company with a good track record of successful moves in the Upper Peninsula and ask for references or examples of their previous work. Experienced movers are also better prepared to deal with unexpected issues that might come up during your move, such as bad weather or hard-to-reach locations. Generally speaking, a moving company that has been in business for a long time will have more knowledge and experience, which can lead to better results.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

If you plan to hire a moving company, checking out customer reviews on different platforms is a good idea. Look for feedback on professionalism, punctuality, and how the company handles complaints on sites such as Yelp, Google, and Angi’s List. According to Spiegel Research Center, “97% of consumers say that customer reviews influence their purchasing decisions.”

While a few negative reviews are normal, it could be a warning sign if you notice a consistent pattern of similar issues. Pay attention to how the company responds to criticism and fixes problems, showing how much they care about their customers. Remember that not every negative review is a deal-breaker, but several consistent problems mentioned by many customers could mean bigger issues. By seeing how quickly and well a company deals with complaints, you can better understand their customer service quality and reliability.

Licensing and Insurance

It is extremely important to ensure that a moving company is fully licensed and insured. In Michigan, moving companies are required to have a state license for conducting local moves within the state. A USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) number is mandatory for moves beyond state lines. These rules make sure the moving company follows Michigan and federal laws, protecting consumers.

You can verify the legitimacy of a moving company by checking its state license and USDOT number by visiting the FMCSA USDOT License Number Lookup. This verification shows the company’s adherence to legal and ethical standards and equips you with the necessary information to seek recourse in case any issues arise during the move. Reputable movers in the Upper Peninsula will hold essential insurance policies, including general liability and workers’ compensation, safeguarding all parties involved against potential mishaps. Always inquire about a mover’s license and insurance details before hiring them to ensure your move is in safe hands.

Matching Mover Services to Your Needs

Choosing a moving company that can cater to your needs is important. Whether you’re moving within the Upper Peninsula or across state lines, the services you require can vary from packing and

unpacking to secure storage solutions or careful handling of unique items. When talking to potential moving companies, clearly communicate all your requirements, special instructions, and concerns. This will help determine if the company can handle your move. A good moving company will listen carefully and offer a customized plan that fits your move perfectly, ensuring a smooth transition to your new home.

Affiliations and Partnerships

When a moving company is connected to well-known “van lines,” it means they have met certain quality standards. This connection suggests that the company is part of a larger network that provides various services ideal for long-distance and international moves. If you are looking for a mover in the Upper Peninsula, finding one associated with a reputable van line means they are committed to quality and have access to ample resources.

Even so, it is still important to research the local moving company and its affiliations to ensure that they meet your specific needs and expectations. This way, you can choose a mover that has the approval of a respected network and meets your moving requirements.

The Ultimate Guide to Packing for Your Upper Peninsula Move

Packing well is essential for a hassle-free move to your new place, ensuring great care for each item. Here are some useful tips and techniques for all parts of the packing process:

Decluttering

Begin your packing with a thorough decluttering. It is an opportunity to simplify your belongings and embrace a fresh start in your new home. Here’s how to effectively declutter:

Sort Through Each Room: Begin with one room at a time, categorizing items into what you’ll keep, sell, donate, or throw away. This step-by-step process makes it easier to decide what’s essential.

Assess Your Needs: Take a close look at your belongings. If an item hasn’t been used in a year, it’s time to let it go to minimize clutter.

Sell or Donate: Hosting a garage sale or listing items online can turn unwanted belongings into extra cash. Donating to local charities helps those in need and is an eco-friendly choice by giving your items a second life.

Effectively decluttering does more than prepare you for a move. It sets the stage for a new chapter in the Upper Peninsula, creating space for new experiences and memories with fewer items to weigh you down.

Packing Supplies

Before packing, gather all the essential supplies you’ll need. Your packing kit should include:

Various sizes of boxes: To fit everything from books to lamps.

Packing tape: To securely seal your boxes.

Bubble wrap: For wrapping and protecting your fragile items.

Packing paper: Ideal for wrapping dishes or filling empty spaces in boxes.

Permanent markers: For labeling each box with its contents and destination room.

In addition to the basics, consider picking up some specialized boxes designed for the unique items in your home. Wardrobe boxes are a game-changer for moving clothes directly from your closet, keeping them wrinkle-free and ready to wear. Dish barrels offer that extra layer of protection for your kitchenware, ensuring everything arrives in one piece.

During a move, it’s important to safeguard your larger items, such as mattresses and upholstered furniture. To keep them pristine, consider using mattress covers and furniture pads. Proper packing materials protect your belongings and make unpacking easier at your new home in the Upper Peninsula. A thoughtful approach to packing preserves your items and helps you start fresh in your new space, with room for new adventures and memories.

Packing Strategies

Packing takes time, but there are ways to make it easier and less stressful. Streamline the process to reduce overwhelm.

Start Early: Get a head start by packing up things you rarely use, such as seasonal items or stuff in the attic, a few weeks in advance. This way, you avoid a last-minute rush and keep your daily routine mostly unaffected.

Stay Organized: Approach packing one room at a time. This helps you keep track of everything and ensures that items from different rooms don’t end up in the same box. It makes unpacking at your new home much easier.

Consolidate & Use What You Have: For clothes, think suitcases; for bulky items like bedding, consider vacuum-sealed bags. Heavy items like books are best in small boxes, so they’re not too heavy to lift. Kitchen pots can hold smaller items, and you can use towels or linens to wrap fragile items for extra protection.

Pack a ‘Necessities’ Box: Create a box with things you’ll need immediately at your new place, such as toiletries, pajamas, and a change of clothes. Having this box handy means you won’t have to search through everything for your essentials.

Strategic Labeling

Labeling your boxes clearly is a game-changer for moving efficiently. Write down the room each box belongs to and a quick list of its contents (like “GARAGE: Tools and Sports Equipment”). Try a color-coding system, assigning a different color to each room, which helps movers quickly identify where everything goes in your new place.

On each label, jot down a short note about what’s inside and if any specific instructions are needed, such as “fragile” or “this side up.” Make sure these labels are easy to spot on the top and one side of the box. This method speeds up the moving process and helps ensure that your belongings are handled correctly and end up exactly where they’re supposed to, making unpacking much smoother.

What Not to Pack

It’s important to note that some items shouldn’t be transported in a moving truck. This includes hazardous substances like chemicals, paint, and flammable items that can easily catch fire. Angi warns, “you might not think of bathroom cleaners or nail polish as dangerous items to move. They are, after all, common household goods. But, they’re dangerous when pressurized, in high-temperature environments, or stored near firearms or car batteries.”

Packing perishable goods and irreplaceable personal items such as family photographs, crucial legal documents, and jewelry is also not advisable. Instead, it would help if you kept them with you during the move. Additionally, carrying valuable electronics like laptops and other high-end gadgets with you is a good idea rather than loading them onto the moving truck to ensure their safety and security.

Handling Fragile Items:

Take extra care when packing fragile items. Use ample bubble wrap and packing paper to fill boxes to prevent shifting. Mark these boxes as “fragile” and consider professional packing services for high-value or delicate items.

Final Thoughts

As you near the completion of your move to the Upper Peninsula, here are some parting thoughts and advice to ensure a smooth transition and a positive start to your new life:

Double-Check Your Moving Plan: Give your moving plan a final review to ensure everything is ready. This means verifying the move date, confirming when the movers will arrive, and checking that all your belongings are properly packed and labeled.

Get Ready for Moving Day: Create a list of items to be loaded onto the truck to ensure nothing is forgotten. Retain crucial items such as paperwork, medicines, and a spare outfit with you.

Do a Final Walk-Through: Before the moving team departs, walk through your old place to ensure nothing is overlooked. Inspect every room, closet, and storage area. It’s also the perfect time to clean or arrange for a cleaning service if needed.

Settle Into Your New Space: Upon arriving in your new Upper Peninsula home, unpack the essentials such as bedding, toiletries, and kitchen supplies. Organizing your sleeping and bathroom areas first can help immediately make the new environment feel more like home.

Discover Your New Community: Spend some time getting to know your new surroundings in the Upper Peninsula. Check out local amenities, parks, shops, and eateries to help you and your family feel more connected to your new home.

Update Your Address: Update your address with the post office, bank, insurance companies, and other important contacts to keep them informed. This will ensure that you continue to receive mail and important information without any problems.

Provide Feedback: After you’ve settled in, consider giving feedback or a review of your moving company. Sharing your experience can assist others in making well-informed choices and offers constructive feedback to the movers.

Take Time to Relax: Allow yourself a moment to breathe and enjoy your new home. Unpacking and getting settled might take a while, so there’s no need to hurry. Embrace this new chapter in the Upper Peninsula.

Moving can be a demanding and busy time, but with careful organization and a hopeful outlook, it also brings the thrill of embarking on new adventures and creating fresh memories. Welcome to your new home in the Upper Peninsula!

Moving to your new home is stressful for anyone, especially older adults. When you’re moving to or from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP), some unique challenges come with it. As a solution, we have put together this guide for seniors looking to make their next move in UP, Michigan.

1) Ask Friends and Family For Help

Whether you are moving as a senior citizen or are helping your elderly parents or family members move, it is always a good idea to rally your family members and friends for their help in the moving process. There is a lot your family and friends can assist you with local moves and long-distance moves, especially if you decide it is time to downsize.

Whether you are decluttering, packing, or making the actual move without a moving company, it is always good to have help to make the process less overwhelming. Although, if you choose to make a DIY move for yourself or your senior parents, it is a good idea to ask for your friends and family’s help at least a few months before moving day to ensure they are available to help.

2) Research Moving Companies and Local Senior Moving Services

If you want or need professional help, look for a senior move manager experienced in relocating seniors to the UP. Team members will be able to navigate any and all aspects of your move, from packing, unpacking, and loading your belongings to arranging for storage or disposal of any unwanted items.

It is also essential to read Google customer reviews; that way, you can see first-hand experiences explaining things like whether or not the company arrived on time. This way, you can guarantee that you choose someone whose clients are satisfied and highly recommend your mover. Furthermore, choosing a company with excellent customer service and getting references from other seniors in the UP who have used their services before is essential.

3) Packing and Local Resources

Packing services can help you pack up your belongings more efficiently, which saves you precious time when you settle into your new home or facility. The majority of moving companies offer full-service moves, including packing and unpacking services, so you should add packing services as part of your research.

If you plan to choose the DIY route with packing, it is crucial to stay organized. One of the most efficient and helpful ways to ensure your packing organization is to pack by room and label the boxes with their assigned room, i.e., bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen. This way, you will know where to tell whoever is helping you move where the boxes go on your moving day.

4) Create a Floor Plan

After you have chosen your new home or facility, it is smart to ask for your new space’s floor plan or blueprint. This way, you can pre-plan where all your furniture will go, avoiding the stress and chaos of figuring out where you want something when your movers or helpers ask you.

5) Look into Hiring a Senior Move Manager

Senior move managers specialize in assisting and supporting you during every aspect of the move. They have extensive knowledge of senior moving, including connections to local resources and communities that can help older adults transition smoothly into assisted living facilities, nursing homes, or other senior living arrangements. In addition, senior move managers’ expertise and knowledge can help soften the stress and confusion of downsizing, relocating, and transitioning into an assisted living facility.

With the experienced knowledge of how to best handle the complexities of senior moving, these managers and movers are pros at handling anything from the financial to legal aspects of senior living arrangements. Furthermore, hiring a moving company with a senior moving specialist can make the process smoother and more manageable for everyone involved.

Moving can be intimidating for anyone, especially older adults who have not moved from their long-term homes for many years. However, the tips we have discussed, such as hiring a specialist in senior moves and packing, can help make your moving process more manageable.

This guide is designed with the intention of eliminating some of your stress around moving. By planning and preparing, older adults can enjoy a stress-free move and settle into their new home with ease.

When choosing a moving company, you’ll notice that there are a ton of options out there. To choose the right one, you have to know what to look for.

That is why we took our experience, dating back over 80 years, and put together this guide on what to look for when choosing your Marquette movers:

1. Fully Licensed and Insured

You should only ever trust a moving company that is fully licensed and fully insured. Don’t risk your move on a moving company that is breaking the law by operating with the proper licenses and insurance.

Proper licenses are required for both local and out-of-state moves, however, the licenses are different. For local moves that are within the state of Michigan, you should look for a moving company with an MPSC number. For long-distance moves that cross state lines, look for USDOT and MC numbers. All of these should be listed at the bottom of your prospective mover’s website.

Guindon Moving & Storage is fully licensed. Our USDOT number is 70719, our MC number is 87113, and our MPSC number is L-18884.

2. Custom-Made Moving Trucks – Not Rentals

Here at Guindon Moving & Storage, we use custom-made moving trucks. You may be shocked to find that this isn’t the case for all of your Marquette mover options. There are Marquette moving companies out there that use rental moving vans, such as those from U-Haul and Penske, to move your belongings.

This is not safe for your belongings.

Professional moving trucks, such as the ones we use, are built with the right suspension, with shock absorbers, and with the proper space to ensure that your items are kept safe from damage. Meanwhile, these rental moving vans are built to save a buck and to make it easier for amateurs to drive, as opposed to being built for effective hauling.

3. Interstate Agent of a National Van Line

Moving with an interstate agent of a national van line, such as Wheaton World Wide Moving, is key to a consistent quality move.

If you’re moving locally, it is a great indicator that your potential Marquette moving company is trustworthy.

If you’re moving out-of-state, being an interstate agent of a national van line means that the moving company has access to hundreds of moving agents across the country that help make your move go smoothly and lower the risk of potential issues.

4. Storage Options

Partnering with a moving company that offers various storage options is the best choice, even if you aren’t planning on storing your belongings.

Going with movers that offer storage means that storing your items can be integrated right into your moving process. We offer warehouse storage, self-storage units, and even storage containers.

Moving is unpredictable, which is why it’s great to have the option of storage at your fingertips by partnering with the right movers. You never know what will happen during your move, and you very well may need to store your items during your move, even if storage wasn’t part of your original plans.

5. Awards and Accreditations

A great way to tell if a moving company is trustworthy is the badges on their website. Look for awards and accreditations that a moving company has earned. For example, Guindon Moving & Storage has the following listed right on our website:

Certified ProMover by the American Trucking Association: Moving & Storage Conference

Member of the Michigan Mover Association

Partner of the Lake Superior Community Partnership

Wheaton World Wide Spire Quality Award Winner: 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

Make sure that your potential movers have badges showing trustworthy accreditations and awards right on the front page of their website.

6. Full-Service Moving Company

To ensure that you get Marquette movers that you can trust, look for a full-service moving company. These full-service movers handle every aspect of your move, giving you a truly hands-free moving process, while offering every service that you may need.
Even if you don’t need every service, this speaks to how professional and trustworthy a moving company is. This is why you should look to make sure your potential moving company offers residential and commercial moving, packing services, various storage options, and specialty moving services, such as senior moving.

7. Google Reviews

While online reviews aren’t the perfect solution for understanding how a moving company will help you, they do provide an indication into how a moving company communicates and how they approach handling negative customer experiences.

Look for their total number of reviews, their overall rating, when their most recent reviews came in, and whether or not the moving company responds to negative reviews.

Final Thoughts

By considering these points, you will be able to narrow down your options and create a shortlist of potential movers. We highly suggest putting in as much research as you can to ensure that your move goes smoothly and your belongings reach their new home without any damage. If you do have any questions about your potential movers, be sure to reach out and speak with them directly.

When you’re preparing to move, packing a mirror can be nerve-racking. One wrong turn, and you’ll have glass everywhere, or worse, someone could get hurt. To give you a helping hand, we’ve assembled this video showing you everything you’ll need to safely move your mirrors.

Use the proper packing supplies

First, make sure you have the necessary supplies. You can purchase mirror moving boxes online or from any local hardware store. Many moving companies sell them, too. You’ll also want to buy bubble wrap, packing paper, and packing tape.

Mirror Packing Steps

Next, thoroughly tape the bottom of the box to prevent anything from sliding out and stand it up on its side.

Generously wrap your mirror in bubble wrap.

Be sure to tape the wrap closed for added security. Cushion the bottom of the box with packing paper and place the mirror inside.

Make sure to fill any empty space with extra paper. The less the mirror moves around, the less chance there is for damage.

Tape the top as securely as the bottom, and mark the box as fragile. Now your mirror is ready to go.

If you still feel uneasy about the process, bring your moving company into the conversation. Who better to ask than the professionals?

Finding long-distance moving companies that are willing to accommodate your needs and are credible businesses can be a challenge. Which is why we have provided 9 tips that could take away some of the pressure that goes along with hiring a long-distance moving company:

Consider all services offered.

Identify the company mission statement.

Check online for positive or negative reviews.

Contact a customer service representative.

Look for free estimates.

Talk to multiple companies to receive numerous quotes.

Understand the company moving process.

Decluttering and Organization

Take the Essentials With You

Check Licensing and make sure companies have insurance

If you follow these tips, you will be on your way to a successful long-distance moving experience.

1. Review Services Offered

There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to finding reliable long-distance moving companies, unfortunately, not all long-distance movers are created equal. It’s essential to look at all services available to decide if the company can handle your move. Most long-distance moving companies offer: Packing supplies, packing services, loading services, and even portable storage containers if you’re looking to move yourself.

Your needs may not require every service provided by the company, so be sure you are firm in your stance. Some companies may pressure you to accept unnecessary services, leading to inflated moving costs at the end of the process.

2. Read The Mission Statement

In many instances, you can get a feel for how a long-distance moving company will treat you as a customer based on their philosophy and core values. It’s helpful to find companies that align with your personal beliefs, such as integrity, positivity, compassion, communication, etc.

3. Check Online Reviews

Customer opinion has never been more valued. Internet reviews are now one of the most widely used resources for individuals and families looking for long-distance movers. Comments and company feedback provide a scope as to how the company handles their business.

The most significant benefit of using online reviews to drive your decision-making is how easy it is to compare and contrast companies. Most review sites have the option to filter by the number of reviews, the average rating, and how recent the reviews were left. You generally want to find the most recent posts because that is representative of how the company has recently performed.

4. Reach Out To Customer Service

Customer service representatives are there to ease any concern you may have regarding your long-distance move. Consider being prepared with a list of questions that are specific to your needs, such as your budget, type of move, number of rooms being moved.

5. Estimates and Quotes

Luckily, companies within the moving industry have recently begun making free estimates and quotes readily available. There is a big difference between a quote and estimate. An estimate is simply a contractor’s best guess as to how much the price will be. On the other hand, a quote is binding. Unless there was a variation to your contract, a quote is set in stone.

Some companies go the extra mile, so be sure to look for companies who offer in-home quotes with a personal visit or online virtual consultation. Having a representative of the company go through every room in your home can drastically improve the accuracy of your quote.

6. Connect With Multiple Companies

Understand that each company may offer similar services, but sometimes the decision comes down to the bottom line. For example, moving costs can grow exponentially depending on how many belongings you have, the distance to your new home, and whether you want to pack yourself. Reaching out and receiving multiple quotes ensures the chance of finding a long-distance mover that works for your needs.

7. Learn About The Process

At times, the logistics of a cross-country move or long-distance move can be overwhelming. When reaching out to find movers that work for you, don’t be afraid to ask how the process will move forward. The best way to understand the company’s moving process is by speaking with the customer service representative, who has firsthand knowledge of how the move gets scheduled, the number of trucks needed to move all belongings, how many days to complete the journey.

8. Decluttering and Organizing

A great way to set yourself up for an efficient long-distance move is by taking the time to declutter and organize your belongings. When you remove unnecessary items, it will go a long way to lowering moving costs.

People decluttering their home commonly utilize various social media marketplaces, resale sites like ebay, and even donate to local charities and Salvation Army. When deciding what to do with an item, you can go through each option to determine what is best. It can seem like a lot of work, but once you get through the starting the process, you will be able to expedite your long-distance move and reduce the amount of stress you will feel.

9. Take The Essentials Yourself

Getting your whole life to fit in moving boxes can be a challenge, especially if there is little organization of belongings done prior to packing. In that case, you may have accidently packed away some important documents and now they’re stuck on the moving truck.

Security experts suggest when moving long-distance, it’s important to separate essential documents and other valuable items. Documents you might want to move yourself include:

Driver’s License

Social Security Card

Passport

Birth Certificate

Recent Bank Statements

Tax Returns

Pay Stubs

The documents above may be important for you when you get to your new home. There’s a great chance you’ll probably need these personal documents when you’re looking for or starting a job. You’ll obviously need to also prioritize clothes, sleeping materials, hygiene products, and a few other things to keep yourself sane while you wait for the moving truck to arrive.

10. Licensed Movers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is responsible for regulating and providing safety oversight of commercial vehicles across the United States. Their goal is to minimize the amount of commercial vehicles involved traffic accidents, thus improving the safety of everyone on the road. Long-distance movers must be licensed to travel over state lines.

Find out if the moving companies you are considering are licensed, follow this link to access the Mover Registration Search.

The Final Word

Using these 10 tips will help improve your confidence when preparing for a long-distance move. It’s crucial to find a company that serves your needs while making you feel comfortable that your belongings will be transported safely and on time.

In Marquette, the price of homes has increased 4.3% in the past year, whereas the home values in Michigan overall experienced a 10% growth from 2020. The average home value in Marquette is higher than the state average, but many homes in Marquette and the U.P. in general offer more than the typical property – more square footage, more land, or better views – homeowners can get more “bang for their buck.”

Zillow noted in their January 2021 market report that the annual growth in home values was faster in January 2021 than at any other point after the 2008 Great Recession.

As the coronavirus pandemic continued throughout 2020 and people adapted to working from home, many people chose the option to move out of larger cities and to smaller cities and rural areas – like Marquette and the rest of the U.P.

After Michigan’s real estate industry was allowed to resume in-person work in May 2020, local media wrote about the market still having high demand and low supply. Within the first 5 days of resumed real estate operations, a local realtor said there were 25 accepted contracts.

The Upper Peninsula could also become a refuge for people worried about climate change. Bridge Michigan, an environmental magazine, wrote about a study that indicated that Michigan and the Great Lakes region could prove to be more resistant to climate change in the future.

The article contains an anecdote about a man from Austin, Texas, who bought a home north of Marquette “as a hedge against climate disruption.”

The Upper Peninsula continues to be marketed to out-of-town homebuyers as an escape from the world, as exemplified by The Detroit News writing about a $7.2 million Baldwin fishing cabin as their latest “MI Dream Home.”

Who wouldn’t want their own piece of paradise, especially now that people can work from anywhere? Laden with recreational activities – hiking, biking, swimming and skiing to name a few of many – the Upper Peninsula is a refuge for those seeking their own escape to the Great Outdoors.

People moving north are seeking privacy, peace and quiet, notes local media. That privacy and peace are more than abundant in places in and around Marquette.

We’ve previously blogged about Marquette’s growing technology industry, thanks to technology initiatives at Northern Michigan University. The Michigan Aerospace Manufacturer’s Association announced last year that they will begin operations of a vertical space launch site north of Marquette.

The growth in the technology industry in the area is sure to bring new residents to Marquette and beyond, further making the Upper Peninsula attractive to people looking to move.

All of these reasons are great to consider Marquette or the greater Marquette County area as a desirable location to relocate to.

As longtime Yoopers — we’ve been in business for more than 80 years — Guindon Moving & Storage is often asked by newcomers for advice on some of the best stores, sites and restaurants around. And we’re happy to share.

One place that happily escaped our attention was the Dumpster Water Grill, in downtown Marquette. Just take a look at the menu: Artisan-sourced leche on a bed of lightly wilted greens. For dessert, mixed berries suspended in a hot dog water gelatin. And wash it down with an Opossum-blossom “tea.”

If you’re wondering why “tea” is in quotation marks, that’s because none of this is real. It’s a fictional restaurant dreamed up by one of the bright and humourous graduates of the Upper Peninsula’s finest colleges — and that’s no joke.

Check out the rest of the menu here: https://dumpsterwatergrill.com/menu.

The Detroit Free Press recently “reviewed” this “restaurant,” and Google users have too. Check out the 58 reviews and counting.
