Take a leisurely drive along the Lake Superior shoreline on M-28 between Marquette and Munising. The vivid reds, oranges, and golds of changing leaves create a stunning backdrop for your journey. Another spectacular route is the Brockway Mountain Drive near Copper Harbor, offering panoramic views of Lake Superior and the surrounding forests.

2. Hiking and Nature Walks

Explore the numerous trails in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, such as the River Trail, which offers views of the Upper and Lower Falls. In Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Chapel Loop Trail (10 miles) showcases colorful cliffs, beaches, and forests. For a shorter option, try the 2-mile Miners Castle Trail.

3. Apple Picking and Cider Tasting

Fall in the Upper Peninsula is not complete without a visit to a local orchard. Check out Sunny G Orchard in Stephenson to pick your own apples and sample fresh cider. Try varieties such as Honeycrisp, McIntosh, and Northern Spy.

Visit local farmers markets like the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market or Sault Ste. Marie Farmers’ Market to find locally grown apples, fresh cider, and other autumn produce. For a unique experience, check out Jampot in Eagle Harbor, run by monks of the Society of St. John, where you can purchase homemade jams, jellies, and baked goods made with local berries and fruits.

4. Fall Festivals and Events

Embrace the autumn spirit at various festivals across the UP. The Keweenaw Fall Color Tour in Houghton County (typically held in early October) offers guided tours along the Keweenaw Peninsula, local food, and artisan crafts. Don’t miss the annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival, usually held in September, featuring local vendors, live music, and seasonal treats.

If you love mountain biking, participate in the Fall Enduro’ Ultimate Mountain Biking Race’ in Marquette, held in early October.

Remember to check out one of the UP’s many corn mazes, especially since many of them come with free hay rides. For a unique experience, check out the Great Pumpkin Roll in St. Ignace, where participants roll pumpkins down a steep hill.

5. Waterfall Tours

With over 300 waterfalls in the UP, autumn is the perfect time to witness these natural wonders framed by colorful fall foliage. Don’t miss Bond Falls near Paulding, with its easily accessible boardwalk, or the mighty Tahquamenon Falls in Paradise, featuring one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi.

The Au Sable Light Station in Grand Marais, accessible via a 1.5-mile trail, offers guided tours and beautiful coastal scenery.

7. Kayaking and Canoeing

Paddle the calm waters of inland lakes like Lake Gogebic or Manistique Lake for a peaceful fall experience. Try kayaking along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with outfitters like Northern Waters Adventures in Munising for more adventure.

8. Mountain Biking

Hit the trails at Copper Harbor Trails System, known for its world-class single-track routes like “The Flow” and “Garden Brook.” Try the Noquemanon Trail Network’s South Trails in Marquette for a mix of scenic views and technical riding.

9. Stargazing

Take advantage of the early sunsets and clear fall nights to stargaze in the UP’s dark skies when fall arrives. The Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, located at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor, offers excellent stargazing opportunities. Bring a blanket and thermos of hot cocoa to enjoy the night sky, including possible Northern Lights sightings. For another great spot, head to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where the lack of light pollution provides stunning views of the stars over Lake Superior.

10. Wildlife Viewing

Fall is a great time to spot wildlife preparing for winter. Visit Seney National Wildlife Refuge for bird watching along the 7-mile Marshland Wildlife Drive. You might see sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, and various waterfowl species. For a chance to view elk, head to the eastern UP, particularly around Hulbert in Chippewa County.

While elk sightings are not guaranteed, the area’s open fields and forest edges provide good opportunities, especially during early morning or evening hours. If you are up for a three-hour ferry ride, there is also a great chance of seeing moose on Isle Royale, ranked #1 out of 63 National Parks by the Wall Street Journal in 2024. Isle Royale also is home to miles of hiking trails and beautiful views of Lake Superior.
