Marinette, Wisconsin, and Menominee, Michigan, are sometimes described as “twin cities” of the Marinette River.

Marinette, the larger of the two cities, with an estimated population of 10,608, is the principal city of the Marinette, Wisconsin–Michigan Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Marinette means “of the sea,” but Marinette, Wisconsin, was named for Marinette Chevalier (1793-1865), who established a trading post on the Menominee River. She became known as “Queen Marinette.”
